Screens to replace bus stops' noisy bells

People living next to bus terminals in Shanghaican look forward to a
peaceful summer because half of the terminals will use LCD screens to
tell drivers when to leave instead of ringing bells.

Shanghai Jiushi Corporation, the parent company of three transit bus
operators, said they would stop the bell ringing, a traditional way to
inform drivers to start buses, at all the terminal stations on its 463
bus routes in Shanghai this summer.

The stations cover half of all city bus terminuses.

Complaints about bell-ringing for buses at terminal stations are
particularly frequent during summer from neighborhoods close to the
stations as household windows are open more often and the heat tends to
make people more sensitive to noise, according to local traffic
authorities.

Jiushi Co has also ordered its bus drivers to follow a few rules to keep
noise to a minimum.

Drivers must turn off their vehicles after waiting at a station for more
than eight minutes and the third bus that pulls into a line at the
station must also cut its engine.

Jiushi also said it has ordered over 1,400 new buses.
