Wealthy ladies in Hangzhou in eastern Chinas Zhejiang Province are not
only satisfied with driving Chrysler and visiting boutiques. Many of them
now also participate in local charitable activities, hoping to raise
money for the poor as the Spring Festival is around the corner.
Ms. Zhao, a manager of a hairdressing shop in Hangzhou, said that she
enjoys doing charitable things. She has contributed a lot of money to
helping an elementary school in Tibet. She has also registered as a
member of a charitable institution organized by Zhejiang Red Cross.
Ms. Tao, an executive of a local lawyers office, joined the
organization several years ago, and she has sent money for children in
the remote mountainous area of Sichuan Province, helping them finish
their compulsory education. As a successful white collar enjoying a
happy family life and a decent job, I think I need to do more for the
society. In the past I couldnt answer the question raised by my son:
What do we live for? and now I think I know the answer. I hope more
people will enjoy similar social status like me also join in charities.
Currently more and more entrepreneurs tend to cooperate with the local
government in various charitable activities, and 2.58 billion yuan
(US$128 million) has been raised for the poor. Local officials say the
charities have been developing very well in recent years.
