Beijing-Taste Drama "Lianhua" Makes its Debut
Lianhua, the heroin starring Chen Xiaoyi
On January 30, the drama “Lianhua,” the first work by the People’s Drama Theatre in 2008, made its debut in Beijing-based Capital Theatre and was warmly received. The performance goes through March 2.
The playwright Zhou Jiangzhi, a famous writer obsessed with antiques, worked incredibly hard completing the work. Directed by Ren Ming and Xu Ang, the play is almost a theatre feast, with outstanding performances and a fascinating story.
Set in Beiping (today’s Beijing) in the 1930s, the story centers on the tragic life of a couple who dreamed of making a fortune through antique dealing. Lianhua, the heroin starring Chen Xiaoyi, once lived a poor but happy life with her husband Tianhe (played by Gu Zhixin). Dreaming of riches,
Lianhua persuades Tianhe to sell an antique narcissus basin she stole from an aristocrat family for whom she served as a maid. In trying to sell the antique at high price, Tianhe, the originally honest man, gradually becomes morally blinded by the lust for money. He goes as far as having an affair
with another woman, which is a heavy blow to his wife. Unable to dissuade Tianhe from dirty dealings and rescue their love, Lianhua desperately shoots her husband dead and then kills herself.
